The creators of Friends almost had the group move to Minnesota in season 4, but decided against it because it would have hurt the show. Taking the main characters out of New York City would have meant losing important elements of the show's identity. However, in season 9, Chandler's temporary move to Tulsa worked because he was still part of Monica's storyline and the rest of the group stayed in New York City. Friends' ability to balance change and familiarity helped make it one of the greatest TV shows of all time.
